Dissing your dog.
There's one thing stronger than your dog's sense of smell: his sense of irony.
I think that Barney needed some dissing (see above).
"Thanks so much, Barney. Great job protecting Elvis's teddy bear. You sure earned your money. Oh, wait... NO YOU DIDN'T!"
