Sons & Daughters
I realized recently that I may be the Angel of Death for television programming. Any show that I really, really like will, without fail, be cancelled. Gone are the days of my having a favorite show which stays on the air for more than 1 or 2 seasons. Usually they don't even last THAT long.
My most recent victim, I fear, is Sons & Daughters. Many claim that it is a "Arrested Development" clone. I think there are certain elements (the extended family) that remind me of AD, but it's far to centered for AD-clone status. AD was farcical. This is satirical--it stays rooted in a real world, people do what they would in real life, and it comments on what is happening and why. It's more like "All in the Family" more than anything else, which says something. First, it says that S&D is pretty smart, and funny, and ascerbic, but mostly it says that it's got an emotional core. We didn't watch Archie Bunker because we agreed with his bigotry or political views (unless you are my grandfather, in which case why haven't you called, Grandpa?), we watched Archie because he was funny and flawed and he loved his family but didn't know how to show it and we desperately wanted him to learn. S&D is like that. You want these people to connect, to learn, and to provide you with a lesson or two. They do that. They do it well. The writers, producers, actors, everyone deserve to commended for that. It's a pity that they may not have the chance to tell any more stories.
What can you do? Sign the petition (see the link below). If you haven't seen the show find someone who has it, or look around online. It's worth the time.
