trailer: Night Watch

Check out the Night Watch trailer.

From Numbmonkey's roving reporter M.F.:

Evidently it's based on a very popular set of Russian sci-fi novels by Sergei Lukyanenko. The movie adaptation was cowritten by Sergei and it's the highest grossing film in Russia ever (grossed more than Spiderman 2 which was big). But to put that in perspective, the first Night Watch film cost $4 million to make and grossed $15 million in Russia. Sounds small, but I guess that's HUGE in Russia. Anyway, Sony bought the distribution rights after seeing it at a film festival and has poured a lot of money into it. They've recut the film for international audiences, and hired an American screenwriter (the guy who wrote Alexander) to write the subtitles (not a direct translation). Sony has also boosted the budget for the next two films. From what I read online, the subtitles are pretty amazing the way they've actually made them part of the film experience. They must have made them very stylized.

All in all it sounds very interesting. When I was reading up on it I stumbled upon a few forums where Russian users were posting lots of "Russia cinema is real cinema, and american cinema is crap" kind of stuff. Pretty funny.
